FAQs

How long before my order ships ?

Most orders will ship between 2 and 5 days depending on shipping services and in stock items. If unforeseen circumstances happen we will reach out to you.

How can I keep my candles burning and looking good longer ?

Be sure to snap off burnt ends of the wooden wicks and remove it as you go. This will keep wooden bits from falling into the wax. You can also keep candles out of direct sunlight since this may cause candles to fade. By keeping candles in a cool dark location the wax will keep from melting and fading.

What kind of wax do you use ?

I use 100% paraffin wax with a mixture of fragrance oil and mica powder for our candles. The wax melts are a para-soy mix with fragrance oil and mica powder.

What is paraffin wax ?

Paraffin wax is a common wax type just like soy and coconut. Paraffin wax is recycled by product from oil refinement. When refined it turns into white soft wax ready for candle making. Paraffin wax has been around for a long time and is often mixed in with other waxes to help them become softer. For example soy wax candles often have paraffin mixed with them to help with the melting process as well as fragrance throw.

Why do you use paraffin wax ?

I started using paraffin wax because after researching I realized most candles already have paraffin in them and it is the best wax for maximum hot throw and vivid color. I also liked that paraffin wax is a recycled product and keeps it from going into landfills and harming the environment. I choose not to use soy wax since I wanted to prioritize hot throw and overall experience of the candle.

What is mica powder ?

Mica powder is a naturally occurring mineral. Mica powder often comes in many different colors. Mica powder can be mined by hand or can be made in a lab. Mica powder is often used in cosmetics, soaps and even candles to create a sparkle appearance.

How and why do you use mica powder ?

I use mica powder by adding small amounts to wax before it is added into our containers. When completely set mica powder gives a sparkle as the candle melts. Once the candle melts to the bottom you can clean out the mica powder and remaining wax with a paper towel and alcohol.

What kind of wicks do you use ?

I use different sizes and shapes of wooden wicks from different companies.

Do I really need to trim or break off the top of the wooden wick ?

By breaking off the burnt ends of the wooden wick it will help the candle burn longer and less hot as well as keeping debris out of the wax allowing for a prettier candle. If the burnt ends are left you will often see bigger, hotter flames and more soot against the glass of the candle. Trimming or snapping off the ends leaving about 1/4 of a inch of wick even if it is burnt will result in the best burn.

My candle is leaving lots of wax against the sides why ?

A little wax against the side especially when the candle is in the first couple burns is completely normal. As the candle burns this wax will slowly melt. By allowing candles to burn between 3 and 4 hours this will prevent most wax from staying on the sides. These candles are thoroughly tested with wax, wick and fragrance oil with the 3 to 4 hour burn time in mind.

How long should I melt wax melts for ?

Our wax melts are tested to be used for 3 to 4 hours at a time. The time we have on our website is just for a strong scent throw but you can continue to use our melts until the fragrance runs out.

Why do I sometimes get small puffs of smoke coming from the wick or flame ?

This can sometimes happen if the wick isn't trimmed, if the candle is near drafts of air like a fan or wind or if it is in a place where people are walking past often. If it isn't constant then it is nothing to be worried about.

There is jagged edges on the top of the wooden wick after a burn what do I do ?

This is the main part you need to take off after each burn when the candle has cooled. This is just wood that has been completely burned and is ready to be removed.

How do I remove excessive smoke when I blow out the flame ?

This often happens when a candle is blown out. To avoid this gently blow out the flame to avoid hot wax from hurting you. A better method is a wick snuffer which will gently and safely put out the flame.

Does any part in the candles contain lead ?

My candles are free of lead and lead has been illegal for sometime but we would still never use ingredients or materials that contain lead.

What if I don't like the fragrance I ordered can I send it back ?

Unfortunately unless there is a candle defect candles cannot be sent back. I try to make the candle descriptions as accurate as possible to the candle scent. If you have questions about more in depth notes than are on the website you can always email us at sweetstarcandlescontact@gmail.com

How do I clean out my used candles ?

You can clean out candles by melting the remaining wax with a hair dryer or by using alcohol and paper towels. Be careful when melting the remaining wax as the jar will be hot as well as the wax. When pouring out the hot wax be sure to not pour it on things that can catch fire or can melt.

Can I refill or reuse the candle jar or materials after my candle has burned ?

We do not recommend making another candle in the same candle jar. This can be dangerous because as the glass gets hot especially near the bottom of the candle the glass can become more fragile. This causes cracking and breaking that cannot be seen by the human eye. We recommend reusing our jars as container for objects around your home like cotton swabs, nails or seashells. Additionally most recycling agencies will accept cleaned glass jars like ours.
